Becoming Laconic

What is Laconism?

“Laconic” refers to a person, speech, or style of writing that uses very few words. The phrase is derived from Laconia, the land of the ancient Spartans, who were known for this minimalist style of communication.

The benefits of brevity

Less to decipher allows your audience to easily recognize important information. Speaking with clarity and conviction will get better results than vague concepts and noise.

How to master Laconism

You can practice clear communication by public speaking, writing, and using Twitter. In all these, be sure to ask for feedback and consider to what your audience has to say. Due to the post length restrictions enforced by Twitter, it forces brevity. The best communicators on Twitter use creativity to say more with less words. I currently don’t use twitter because of the distraction, but I can see the benefit in this area.

Let’s Start With… Why Design Vlog?

Why am I starting Design Vlog now? I have several goals in mind as I launch this project.

To learn how to write well

In the past I haven’t spent much time honing my writing skills, but it has always been something I wished to do. As with any other valuable skill, writing well takes practice and consistency and this where I intent to practice.

Improve verbal communication

I have yet to begin vlogging, but what attracts me to the idea is it will force me to improve my verbal communication. In the past, I’ve had some issues “getting to the point” and can struggle to articulate my thoughts. I’m looking to use this space, and the medium of video, to improve in this area.

Produce more work

I wish for this to be a ‘sand box’ where I can experiment with a lot of ides, and see what sticks. The challenge will be consistantly producing content. Quick and dirty is fine as long as it get’s the idea accross and moves the needle in the right direction. This vlog will not be polished, it will be about doodles, tests, and half baked ideas.

To get started

Do I really know this is a good idea? No, not really. That said, I need to get started on these goals so I might as well start here.
